THE CULTURE AND CUSTOM OF THE MALAY COMMUNITY: THE CUSTOM OF USHERING A NEW FISHING NET

INTRODUCTION

Every new fishing net that to be used in the sea needs to be blessed before hand by a medicine-man with incense and mantras. Using the blossom of a coconut palm, the blessing starts from the end of the string handle to the lowest part of the net. It is believed that such action enables the fishing net to capture large amount of fish.
