THE CULTURE AND CUSTOM OF THE BANJAR COMMUNITY OF BAGAN SERAI, PERAK BAPUKUNG OR PUKONG (LULLABY A BABY)

Bapukung means the
action of putting a baby to sleep or to lullaby a baby in a cradle while
sitting down. The baby whole body is wrapped in a piece of cloth with its end
tied with a string called ijuk. In the ceremony the mother sings songs, among
them is as follows:
“Guring guring
anakku guring
Guringakan dalam
pukungan
Anakku nang bungas
lagi bauntung
Hidup baiman mati
baiman”
(Sleep my baby, sleep my baby)
(Sleep wrapped in a
piece of cloth)
(Ooo how lucky is
my baby)
(Life is blessed
and death too)
If the baby refuses
to sleep then the mother says:
“Hish! Cicak! Anakku jangan diganggu inya sudah guring.
Hish! Cicak! Anakku
jangan diganggu dia sudah tidur.”
(Hish! Lizard! Dont
disturb my baby for he is already asleep)
